This Week on The John Adam Show Relationships People do business with people they know and like. In the 3 1/2 years I've been doing the radio show, I've had the pleasure of being introduced to many business organizations and have done my share of networking. I remember when I first started reaching out to the community, I was pretty naive in thinking that attending a few meetings and shaking some hands would make a big difference to my business. I later discovered that I wasn't the only one. I recently attended a professional association meeting and listened to a businessman complain that although he had been to these meetings "a couple of times" he was disappointed that no one was making an effort to follow up and contact him...he saw no real benefit to his business. I had to smile (in that "been there, done that" sort of way) and gently coach him back to reality. Here's what I've learned along the way. You have to get involved. I mean really involved. Get on a committee, or volunteer some time to help out where needed. Show the organization that you care about it. If you help other people get what they want, they will help you get what you want. It's that simple. The best part is that you will get to know some amazing people. In the end, I don't think I'll care so much about how successful my business was...but I will look back with gratitude for the relationships I built and for the opportunity to profoundly connect with others who just wanted to make a difference.
